Essay: When is a person? Christian perspectives on the beginning of life

When we turn from the complex and painful dilemmas raised by abortion to the world of the Bible, we are struck by the gulf between the biblical world and our own. We cannot look for proof-texts which will provide neat answers to these complex problems. Sometimes Christian writers and teachers have attempted to construct a complete edifice of teaching about abortion on a single text, such as the verses in Exodus 21:22-24, which deal with accidental injury to a pregnant woman. We will look at this passage later but it is not the place where we should start.
